The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers
Biomedical DivisionChairman's Annual Report (Session 2018/2019)
Introduction
With the dedication of our Committee and active participation by
members, the Biomedical Division (BMD) has gone through a
fruitful year of Session 2018/2019.
The Division has undergone very good developments over
the past 30 years. I am glad to see the Division’s continuous contribution as a
learned society and sharing platform for the biomedical engineering field in Hong
Kong. To keep up with the emerging
technologies in biomedical profession worldwide, the BMD has
organised various activities in collaboration with other institutions,
the industry and the academia in:
1. supporting
local biomedical engineering research and development;
2. promoting knowledge exchange among the
academia, industry and overseas biomedical engineering society;
3. organising
technical training, workshops and visits; and
4. empowering
young students to pursue the profession.
During this Session, the BMD participated in the “The 28th Congress of Japan Association for
Clinical Engineers (JACE)” in order to foster stronger connection with overseas biomedical
engineering societies and enhance members’ appreciation of worldwide development in the field.
During the congress, the BMD was invited to give a keynote seminar in this highlighted event. In
the keynote speech “Clinical engineering and management in Hong Kong”, Mr. Will LEUNG of
HKIE-BMD gave practical examples of the practices of biomedical engineering in Hong Kong, in
particular in the areas of clinical and hospital engineering, such as Healthcare Technology
Management and hospital project management activities. He also shared the roadmap of becoming
a professional biomedical engineer in Hong Kong, with highlights of our very unique Scheme “A”
training.
).
Talks on “Seminar on Mobile Exo-neuro-musculo-skeleton for Upper Limb Rehabilitation after
Stroke” and “Know more on Biomedical Engineering and Technology” were also delivered at the
InnoCarnival together with booth exhibition, to promote and arouse the public’s interest to the
profession. Moreover, the BMD proactively embarked on membership drive to undergraduates
via various promotional events, including seminars on HKIE membership promotion and biomedical engineering career talks at local universities.
The BMD also co-organized with The Chinese University of Hong Kong for the event of
“Engineering Medical Innovation Global Competition (EMedIC Global 2018)”, in encouraging
university students in demonstrating their innovative ideas in developing different medical device
technologies and solutions. Moreover, the BMD continued to support the competition “Gerontech
Youth Challenge” organised by The Hong Kong Council of Social Service for encouraging
primary and secondary students in Hong Kong to demonstrate their creativity and engineering
capability in developing gerontechnology.
I would like to extend my gratitude to the excellent support from the HKIE Headquarters and other
Divisions’ enthusiastic collaboration. The active participation of all of our Committee Members
and stakeholders are also crucial for organising the activities during the year. In the upcoming
year, the BMD will continue promotion of the field, organising learned society activities and attract
young talents to pursue the biomedical engineering profession. I have great confidence that the
new Committee members will lead the Division to the next era, with healthy growth and
contributions benefiting our biomedical engineering profession, industry and community.
