Chairman’s Annual Report
1. Introduction
The Biomedical Division has been taking bold but steady steps to promote the professionalism and enhance the capability of local engineers in biomedical engineering development. With numerous activities being completed in the Session 2008/09, the Division has organised various activities covering a very broad topics contributing from our strategic composition of the Committee, consisting of active biomedical engineers from the medical device industry, academia, regulatory body, government and semi-government organizations, raising the profile of the Division.
With the on-going government funded project under Professional Services Development Assistance Scheme (PSDAS) titled “To promote the professionalism and enhance the competence of local engineers in facilitating the design and manufacturing of high value-added medical and healthcare devices”, a two-day conference cum 1-day technical visit “BME2008 Hong Kong Biomedical Engineering International Conference” was organised from 23 to 25 October 2008, with participant headcount over 400. BME2008 served as an exchange forum for local and international biomedical engineers, scientists, researchers, practitioners, regulators and industrialists, facilitating the newest information interflow and promoting learning from overseas successes and thus stimulating industrial enhancement. The Conference has been brought to a successful close, with acclamation credited to the biomedical engineering academic and research achievements, both inspiring and rewarding, as well as celebration for our biomedical engineering professionalism.
In the past Session, the Division has been closely collaborating with our affiliations in organising various CPD seminars and trainings with their intelligence in different aspects. The Division has been working closely with various Divisions within HKIE, including the Electronics Division, the Information Technology Division, the Manufacturing and Industrial Engineering Division, the Young Members Committee and the Associate Members Committee. We have also actively co-organised various activities with IEEE-EMBS Hong Kong Chapter, Hong Kong Medical and Healthcare Device Industries Association and the Biomedical Engineering Alumni Association of HKPolyU to promote the exchange of information in biomedical field.
May I take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to our Committee Members who have devoted a lot in sharing their invaluable experience with the Division. In the coming Session, the Division will continue enhancing the connections with the industry and the medical practitioners, and fostering the training of high quality engineers, to boost the development of the biomedical engineering profession.
