The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers

Biomedical Division

Chairman's Annual Report (Session 2020/2021)

Introduction

With the enthusiastic dedication and leadership and active participation of our committee members, the Biomedical Division (BMD) has been gone through a fruitful year of Session 2020/2021 despite the challenges COVID-19 pandemic.

The Division has undergone very good developments over the past 30 years. I am glad to see the Division’s continuous contribution as a learned society and sharing platform for the biomedical engineering field in Hong Kong.  To keep up with the emerging technologies in biomedical profession worldwide, the BMD has organized various activities in collaboration with other institutions, the industry and the academia in:

1.       supporting local biomedical engineering research and development;

2.         promoting knowledge exchange among the academia, industry and overseas biomedical engineering society;

3.         organising local international conference to promote BME;

4.         organising technical training, workshops and visits; and

5.         attracting and inspire more young students to pursue the profession.

During this Session, the BMD co-organized Biomedical Engineering Conference (BME2020), with Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) during 27th and 28th November 2020. Thanks for great effort from Ir Prof Richard So and conference organizing committee, the 1.5-day online event attracted more than 300 participants, both locally and from various overseas territories such as Malaysia, Singapore, New Zealand, USA, etc. This was a perfect example to demonstrate how innovations & technologies can breakthrough conventional barriers and hence create new opportunities as well as collaboration between academia, public service and industry. Besides. BMD has supported Virtual Inno-carnival 2020 by arranging representatives to attend and provide introduction of medical device risk management by Ir Raymond Fu and Mr. Charles Chu.

The Division also supported in various career development related platforms in promoting BME. Mr. Peter Nam had contributed an article to JobsDB on "The path to Medical Physicist". Besides, Ir Karon Lo had contributed another article to Classified Post on “Medical Device from Concept to Reality”.  Besides, Ir Karon Lo and myself have participated in the interview with Sing Tao Daily in providing insight and experience sharing related to BME Career Prospects and Future Development as well as introduction of BMD.

During the difficult time of COVID-19 pandemic, members of our division have all contributed in their positions to fight against the pandemic. Examples include sourcing and shipping ventilation equipment, developing and deploying fever screen systems at border control points, developing mask testing equipment … etc.

I would like to extend my gratitude to the excellent support from the HKIE Headquarters and other Divisions’ enthusiastic collaboration.  The active participation of all of our Committee Members and stakeholders are also crucial for organising the activities during the year.  In the upcoming year, the BMD will continue promotion of the field, organising learned society activities and attract young talents to pursue the biomedical engineering profession.  I have  great confidence that the new Committee members will lead the Division to the next era, with healthy growth and contributions benefiting our biomedical engineering profession, industry and community
