Introduction

With the enthusiastic dedication and leadership and active participation of our committee members, the Biomedical Division (BMD) has been gone through a fruitful year of Session 2019/2020 despite the challenges of both social unrest and COVID-19 pandemic.

The Division has undergone very good developments over the past 30 years. I am glad to see the Division’s continuous contribution as a learned society and sharing platform for the biomedical engineering field in Hong Kong.  To keep up with the emerging technologies in biomedical profession worldwide, the BMD has playing a supporting role in various global events related to BME and organizing a global BME conference in Hong Kong in collaboration with local institutions, the industry and the academia in. Besides, the Division also:

1.         supporting local biomedical engineering research and development;

2.         promoting knowledge exchange among the academia, industry and overseas biomedical engineering society;

3.         organising local international conference to promote BME; and

4.         attracting and inspire more young students to pursue the profession.

During this Session, the BMD participated in the “第一屆 生物醫學工程創意競賽 之「愛。創耆樂」” organised by Department of Biomedical Engineering, The Polytechnic University of Hong Kong and foster BME related innovation from Secondary and Primary School youngsters. The event also demonstrates the creativity of young future engineers and outcome of STEM education. During the event, four BMD committee members (Ir Bryan So, Ir Karon Lo, Mr. Jeremy Wong, Ms. Candice Lau) supported as judging panel of the competition and provided comments & recommendation to student’s inventions in terms of technical feasibility, commercial feasibility and enhancement suggestions. Thanks to Ir Cristina Leung, we have been able to share the experience of our profession in private hospital Sector to the wider community via JobsDB (https://hk.jobsdb.com/en-hk/shorten/?p=44665).

The Division also supported in various career development related platforms in promoting BME. Ir Cristina Leung had contributed an article to JobsDB on "Development of Clinical Engineering Profession in Private Hospital Sector in Hong Kong". Besides, Ir Karon Lo and myself have participated in the interview with Ming Pao Jump in providing insight and experience sharing related to BME Career Prospects and Future Development. During the difficult time of COVID-19 pandemic, members of our division have all contributed in their positions to fight against the pandemic. Examples include sourcing and shipping ventilation equipment, developing and deploying fever screen systems at border control points, developing mask testing equipment … etc.

I would like to extend my gratitude to the dedicated support from the HKIE Headquarters and other Divisions, and particularly for the enthusiastic collaboration of all our Committee Members and relevant stakeholders. In the upcoming year, the BMD will continue to promote high quality continue professional training to existing biomedical engineers, to attract young talents to pursue the biomedical engineering profession, to provide excellent services to the clinical institutes, and ultimately to safeguard the general public’s benefit and interest. I step down with great confidence that the new Chairman and Committee members will lead the Division to the next era, with sustainable growth and a view of benefiting our biomedical engineering profession, industry and community.
