Report

Exhibition for Biomedical Technologies at Innocarnival 2017

By Mr Sam SHUM and Mr Will LEUNG

The InnoCarnival 2017 exhibition was the anchor event of InnoTech Month organised by Innovation and Technology Commission (ITC) at the Hong Kong Science Park from 21 to 29 October 2017. The Biomedical Division (BMD) hosted a booth in the exhibition to demonstrate innovative and prevailing biomedical technologies to the public.

The exhibition booth comprised of two sections. The first section showcased innovative medical products designed and developed by Biomedical Engineers. An electronic stethoscope, with wireless data transmission module and back-end diagnostics tools, enabled remote diagnosis and future health screening. In addition, a 3D-printed prosthetic arm demonstrated how fundamental technologies could aid disabled people in developing countries with practically low manufacturing cost and desirable durability.

In the second section, visitors had the opportunity to come across real-life medical devices being used in hospital, such as Physiological Monitor and Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) equipment. They were excited about simulating the operation of medical equipment and enjoyed hands-on experience of diagnosis. Most importantly, the visitors had the grasp of the roles of Biomedical Engineers in hospitals: holistic management of medical technologies and how engineering practice safeguard the provision of healthcare services.

We were pleased to observe the increasing popularity of Biomedical Engineering profession in public. We treasured every face-to-face interaction with the visitors which inspired the practitioners to improve quality of healthcare. BMD will continue to promote the profession and foster linkage between professional bodies through organising various activities.
